Help them to get better price for agro products, Organize awareness Programmes to realize their rights. To Empower Tribal Women to become economically self sufficient through various skill development programmes. To Help youth to become aware that they are the hope and future of the Vibrant Tribal Society.

Our Story

History

Muktidata Tribal Welfare Society was started in 2014 at Muktidata Ashram, Aitibi.West Garo Hills,Meghlaya,India. It was registered on 26th March 2018 under Meghalaya Societies Registration Act XXI of 1983. Fr.Benoy Joseph is Its first Director cum Secretary and  Mr.John D Sangma the Village Headman is the President.

The people  belong to the Garo,Rabha,Boro,Hajong and Koch tribe. Each tribe has its own traditions, customs, culture and dress. Most of them are poor and unemployed. Some of them are having areca nut garden, pineapple garden but they are exploited by the middle men. So they are still poor even though they have areca nut garden and pinapple garden.

Muktidata Tribal Welfare Society is formed to save the farmers from middle men who have been exploiting the people for many decades. It has organized number of awareness programmes for the farmers in the remote villages of Tikrikilla area.

 Women Empowerment and Income Generating   programmes were launched. A cooperative Society was started for the women of Tikrikilla area on 15th April 2018. 

Tailoring and Embroidery centre was stared for School drop out girls. Fair price Shop was started for poor people. We have launched Ama washing powder, Marian Rosary making Unit, Areca Leaf  Plate making Unit, MMCS Textile Shop, Organic Pepper Supply, Organic Turmeric Powder supply.

We are aim at providing employment for youth and women. So we are planning to start Mini Fruit processing Factory at Paham. Cattle feed making Unit,  Soap making Unit.

Local Situation

Tikrikilla  area has an agrarian economy and is known for its forest products. The source of income come from cash crops,    potatoes, rice, maize, pineapples, bananas, spices like ginger, turmeric, pepper  and lately from rubber and Areca nut plantation . There are  no major industries in this part of Meghalaya. Rice and vegetables are mainly cultivated on the hills.  The mode of cultivation is Jhum or shifting cultivation.

The people of this area in general economically  poor. The employment opportunities are reduced to the minimum. The people of Hill are being cheated easily because of their ignorance. Many villages do not have any good road to reach the head quarters or nearby town, to reach a school or hospital.

Some of the population who had   the privilege of being educated especially in the urban areas has government jobs or jobs in the schools, while majority of people work as daily labourers in the fields, in the quarries and coal mines. There are no industries found in this area.
